Footwear Advice from Milton Foot and Orthotic Clinic

Our feet are often the most neglected and ignored part of our body. It is usually not until we have painful problems with our feet that we make them a priority and seek medical attention. One of the best ways to protect our feet is with proper fitting footwear.

Ideal footwear should have the following features:

  • Firm heel counter
  • Shock absorbing soles
  • Sturdy retaining medium
  • Minimal heel height (no more than 2 inches)
  • Proper size and width

Improper footwear can result in foot problems such as blisters, foot fatigue, arch and heel pain and may also cause problems in the lower back, knee, hip and ankle.

The average person takes 10 000 steps per day, most of these while wearing footwear. A proper fitting shoe can create an optimal neutral alignment with the foot and ground,  helping to create appropriate alignment with the rest of the body.  Although it is not realistic to be in a shoe as described above at all times, if you can increase time spent in appropriate footwear (especially during high impact activities) your feet will thank you in the long run!
